TYPES OF SCAFFOLDING

Scaffolding is a significant part of any construction project, regardless of the project’s scale, type, or other characteristics. Its primary use is to help support the structure that is being worked on while also giving workers space on which they will be able to work and store the materials that they will need for their job. It can come in different types; each is made of diverse materials and has varying characteristics that one can use as required in the construction of various structures.

The different types of scaffold structures are:

Single Scaffold:

This type is often referred to as bricklayers scaffolding since brick masons mostly use it. It contains the usual components that one will see in this type of structure, such as ledgers, putlogs, standards, etc., all of which have standard ways in which one can set them up. One keeps the distance between the standards within 2.0-2.5 meters and that between ledgers at an interval of about 1.2-1.5 meters. One inserts the putlogs in intervals of about 1.2 to 1.5 meters, similar to the ledgers. This type is generally used for brick masonry as it has a limited height, especially useful for the laying of brick walls, which is taller than people but not as tall as multistory buildings.

Cantilever Scaffold:

In this type, the standards need to be supported by a series of needles. There are two ways in which one can use these needles, and they are named accordingly. If one takes these needles out through holes in the wall, then they are called a single frame type. If one inserts them into the floors through the openings, it is called a double frame type or independent scaffolding. Those who construct it must ensure the use of the correct variety. Generally, one uses this when the ground cannot support the standards, won’t be free of traffic, or when the upper part of the wall is under construction.

Suspended Scaffold:

This type is where one suspends a platform from the roof with the help of ropes and wires. They usually use this for simple maintenance work done on tall buildings, including repair work, repainting, pointing, etc. This type is better suited because it would generally be too much work to set up the structure from the ground up every single time maintenance work is required.

Trestle Scaffold:

In this type, the platform on which workers use is supported by ladders or by portable tripods. Because of this, its height will not be more than 5 meters. Due to its make, it is advantageous when one needs to get work done inside a building like repairs, plastering and painting. Since one makes this support structure out of steel, its strength is excellent, providing ample support to the users.

Conclusion:

As can be seen, there are various types of scaffold structures, each with characteristics that make them suited for specific situations. It is essential for anyone who is or will be in construction to know these types, as they can make the job more efficient, comfortable and safer by using the correct type of scaffolding.
