“President Trump reaffirmed that the United States is ready and willing to continue to provide assistance to the people of Lebanon,” the White House said in a statement.
Mr. Trump “agreed with other leaders on the need to closely coordinate the international response,” said the US executive.
He also “urged the Lebanese government to conduct a full and transparent investigation, for which the United States is ready to provide assistance.”
Mr. Trump called for calm in Lebanon while recognizing the “legitimacy of calls by peaceful protesters for transparency, reforms and accountability,” the US executive concluded.
At a time when anger is roaring in the country at a discredited ruling class, French President Emmanuel Macron had already called Thursday for an international investigation, an idea rejected since by his Lebanese counterpart Michel Aoun.
