New record in Florida with 216 deaths from coronavirus in 24 hours

Florida recorded 216 new deaths from the coronavirus on Wednesday, another record in the state which continues to be one of the hotbeds of the disease in the United States.

The previous record dated from the day before, with 186 dead. The total number of deaths from COVID-19 in the state now stands at 6,333, the local health department said.

As of Wednesday, 9,446 new infections were also recorded, slightly down from the daily total of around 10,000 cases detected in weeks.

In all, 451,423 people have been officially infected in the state, out of a population of 21 million.

A quarter of the cases are in Miami.

Florida recently became the second state in terms of number of cases, behind California and ahead of New York.

According to the Johns Hopkins University benchmark count, the death toll in the United States was set to hit 150,000 on Wednesday.
