For too many people, showering is a functional activity. It’s something we do, but don’t think about.

But showering can and should be an involved, joyful part of your day. Thinking about how you can upgrade your shower routine won’t just help you get cleaner – it’ll transform a daily task into an enjoyable activity.

Here are our 5 top tips for how to upgrade your shower routine.

1. Use a Water Filter

Water filters for showers can have an incredible impact on how much you get out of your shower routine.

A good water filter has numerous benefits, including:

  • Removing bacteria and other impurities from the water supply – this is especially advantageous if water quality in your area isn’t the best
  • Filtering out chlorine, which damages your hair and can be harmful to your skin if you’re repeatedly exposed to it
  • Adding essential minerals such as Vitamin C, which help keep your skin healthy

They’re inexpensive, easy to install, and can dramatically improve how much you enjoy your shower time. You may also see numerous health benefits as a result.

2. Go Beyond the Basics

Do you have a vast array of shower products, or do you only believe in the bare essentials?

Believe it or not, there’s plenty of middle ground. Many people (and let’s be honest – mostly men) stick with a couple of trusted shower products that “get the job done,” but you don’t have to spend a fortune kitting out your bathroom with oils, lotions, and creams to upgrade your shower routine.

Try switching up from that abrasive 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner to separate products that you enjoy the smell of. The shower gel you use to wash under your arms is probably fairly powerful – why not get a complementary product to wash the rest of your body? We sweat all over, and it’s worth washing properly!

Just a couple of extra shower products can make your routine more effective and enjoyable. It can also help you smell better – and who doesn’t want that?

3. Try Cold Water Showers

Cold water has numerous health benefits compared to hot water. It can:

  • Boost your immune system, making you less vulnerable to common colds and other minor illnesses
  • Help you establish a disciplined routine by providing a bracing start to your day
  • Reduce the symptoms of muscle inflammation – this is why many athletes take ice baths after exercising

Of course, cold showers won’t be as pleasant as hot showers. But you can enjoy both! If you want a relaxing soak, that’s fine. If you want to prepare yourself for the day, consider a cold shower.

4. Think About Where You’re Washing – and Not Washing

As mentioned above, we sweat all over our bodies. Pores become clogged, and the “trickle down” of water from the areas we wash intensively won’t fully clean areas like your legs.

It’s worth vigorously washing your entire body, not just those areas that we consider “dirty.” This means taking time to wash your back, your legs, your feet, and your stomach. You’ll feel so much better, and your skin will thank you!

5. Make it a Treat

Lighting scented candles in your bathroom half an hour before a luxurious soak can transform your shower into a soothing self-care routine.

We tend to associate baths with tranquility more than showers, but some people don’t like baths – that doesn’t mean we have to miss out! Treat your shower as a spa experience and enjoy the benefits.
