Belarusian human rights defenders claim over 300 people detained at rallies

The human rights center Viasna, not registered by the Belarusian authorities, reported that the number of those detained at unauthorized protests in the republic on Sunday, November 22, exceeded 300 people.

According to the center, the number of people detained during the day throughout the country at mass events is 305, most of them in Minsk. There are also detainees in Borovlyany, Grodno, Pinsk, Zaslavl, Brest, Novopolotsk.

Earlier in Minsk, eyewitnesses reported the use of stun grenades by police officers.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic previously confirmed that law enforcement agencies used special equipment against violators of public order. It was noted that people went out onto the roadway, blocking the movement of vehicles, and also resisted the police during the arrest.

In addition, military equipment was pulled into the center of Minsk before the start of the action. Her movements were caught on video, and the videos were distributed on the web.

More than 700 people were detained at protests a week earlier.

Presidential elections were held in Belarus on August 9. According to the Central Election Commission, the incumbent head of state Alexander Lukashenko won for the sixth time in a row. Those who disagreed with this outcome took to the streets, and citizens’ discontent turned into mass protests throughout the country, which continue to this day.
