World rowing champion dies of bone cancer at age 26

World rowing champion Italian Filippo Mondelli has died at the age of 26 due to leg bone cancer. This was reported on the website of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI).

“Italian sport mourns the untimely death of Filippo Mondelli. Goodbye, Filippo, we will never forget you, ”the message says.

Doctors diagnosed the athlete with osteosarcoma of the left leg a year ago, after which Mondelli underwent surgery.

CONI President Giuseppe Abbagnale expressed his condolences, noting that “this is a difficult moment for rowing, for Mondelli’s teammates and those close to him.”

Filippo Mondelli won the title of world and European champion in the competitions of fours in 2018, and in 2021 he was elected to the council of the Italian National Olympic Committee.
