Why Ford Mustang Mach-E buyers in New Jersey get a $5,000 discount

Good guy Ford is back again, making sure Mustang Mach-E buyers aren’t losing out due to ongoing production delays of the electric SUV. On Wednesday, CarsDirect first reported the Blue Oval is coughing up a $5,000 discount specifically for buyers in New Jersey. Why? Because state incentives expired for purchasing an EV locally, so Ford’s making sure buyers still keep money in their pocket.

Specifically, the state’s Charge Up New Jersey program expired while some owners based in the state are still waiting to take delivery of their Mustang Mach-E. Ford told Roadshow in a statement, “As part of our commitment to treat customers like family, we are providing $5,000 to approximately 125 customers who did not receive their Mustang Mach-Es before a New Jersey state incentive deadline passed.” Of note, this isn’t a new incentive buyers can take advantage — just something to do right by previous buyers patiently waiting for their EV.

The state incentive, combined with a federal tax credit of $7,500, makes Ford’s EV far more affordable for the average buyer, so it’s good to see the company stepping up. The last thing the automaker needs is an upset group of owners surrounding its first mass-market EV. And it’s not the first time it stepped up.

Previously, Ford provided a $1,000 cash back incentive to apologize for ongoing production delays associated with the EV. It also dished out free charging vouchers to soon-to-be owners.
