On April 4, Orthodox Christians remember the martyr Vasily Ankirsky. Our ancestors have always associated this day with the arrival of spring and sunny days. Often, drops began on Vasilyev’s day, so people would say: “Vasily Kapelnik has bothered the winter.” But Vasily was also called by other names. There is, for example, such a nickname as Warm. What, according to popular beliefs, could not have been done on this day, so as not to scare off luck?
With the beginning of the drops, the people carefully watched where the water flowed from the roofs, forming streams, and did not erect any buildings on that place. It was believed that the melted snow “breaks the path”To the bowels of the earth, so the house built there will be wobbly.
How the weather was predicted before
On St. Basil’s Day in Russia, they traditionally read in the sun. If at the rising of the heavenly body a reddish or pink glow was observed, then the peasants counted on a rich harvest. And if the clouds on that day were filled with gray or blue, then people knew – to wait for warm, but rainy summer weather.
How to greet spring with baked goods
On Vasily’s day, women cooked kalachiki in the oven, which were associated with the sun. Any hostess will be able to repeat such a dish, using the following recipe: 1 egg, 200 g butter, 9 tablespoons of milk and 2 sugar, a spoonful of yeast. Kalachi need to stick, wait until they rise in the oven, then decorate them with raisins and put them on to bake further.
It was forbidden on April 4 to take out garbage, sweep, wash clothes and repair housing. This behavior promised troubles and health problems. It was also considered a bad omen to cook several dishes at the same time. On this score, the old-timers said: none of them will turn out tasty then. Finally, it was impossible to engage in embroidery and knitting, otherwise any resulting knot could also confuse any paths in life. And even the sewing of clothes on April 4 promised a shortening of life.
