In the market for some new gloves? Today we’re comparing two contenders with great reviews and wildly different price ranges. Both these boxing gloves are versatile, multi-use pieces meant for training and sparring, but which one would win in a fight? Let’s start, shall we:
Venum Elite Boxing Gloves
Price: £79.98
Weight: 10-16oz
Outer Material: Semi Leather
Features: Triple density foam, mesh panels, attached thumb, Velcro closure
These luxury gloves are fully handmade: a rarity today, where machine made is the norm. With a mid-range price point not quite straddling the 100 GBP mark, the semi-leather construction and attention to detail are better than expected.
In terms of protection, these offer triple density foam, making the experience cushioned and comfortable. The attached thumb is also a protective measure now commonly found in boxing gloves of all price ranges. A mesh panel for comfort and heat regulation is again, the industry standard. While pleasant, it isn’t particularly unique.
Aesthetically, these boast a mix of matte and patent finishes in an all-black colorway, making them minimalistic and stylish. The design is modern as well, as is consistent with Venum’s branding.
The closure is a Velcro strap, which makes for easy on-and off, while the cuff is long which is good to see as that’s generally the case with a lace-up. Longer wrist straps make for better protection, so we’re all for it.
Overall, the Venum Elite gloves are a solid option with a great superficial design, but they don’t bring anything innovative to the table.
Starpro M33
Price: £26.99
Weight: 8-14oz
Outer Material: PU 5G Reach-approved leather alternative
Features: One-piece foam padding, Mono Tech wrist stabiliser, ventilation holes, Velcro closure, dry-fit
This multipurpose glove is liked by professionals and beginners alike for its versatility: it’s the kind of glove that can be used for training and sparring. Its wide range of weights between 8oz and 14oz alsi indicates that it accommodates a wider variety of needs and skill levels. You could even use this pair for bag work if you’re a seasoned fighter: all you’d need is a lighter weight.
The material used to construct the outer shell is a quality PU 5G REACH- approved leather alternative, making it a durable choice for those who abstain from animal products. While they don’t offer the semi-leather that Venum does, this is definitely reflected in the difference in price points.
Starpro’s one-piece foam padding is a well-designed, shock-absorbent foam padding that disperses force from impact across the surface of the glove. This keeps them lighter to wear while still making sure our knuckles are protected.
The Mono-Tech wrist stabiliser, which is Starpro Combat’s own technology, claims to keep the wearer’s wrist safe during high impact punching. This definitely tested true, and also helped to keep the glove secure around the wrist for a better fit.
The ventilation holes included in the glove kept our hands dry, as did the mesh palm, which Starpro Combat calls their Hydra-Flow technology. It’s a dry-fit design that absorbs sweat, maintaining grip.
We liked that M33s come in two colours: classic black and ‘Viper Green.’ Both look impressive and make the gloves better suited to different tastes.
Overall, Starpro’s M33 passes all the tests. It fits well, maintains the internal temperature, and keeps your hands safe, all at a fantastic price point.
Verdict: These gloves share similar qualities, but Starpro comes out on top: this is because it’s almost a dupe for everything that the Venum does, but at a much lower price. Quality wise, both are practically the same. Another area Starpro beats Venum out in is the weight range, making it much more versatile overall.
