The Upper Garden of Peterhof was closed for restoration. It will reopen to the public in 2024, the directorate of the Peterhof Museum-Reserve reported on Friday, July 31.

More than 50 years have passed since the last restoration, TASS reports.

“The structures are worn out, there are many leaks in the fountain systems. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out restoration work, “said Yulia Rozhkova, head of the restoration, reconstruction and overhaul service of the Peterhof GMZ.

It is planned to change the drainage system of the garden, as due to problems with it, the territory becomes waterlogged.

The restoration will affect, among other things, the Oak and Mezheumny fountains, built in the 1730s and decorated by the architect Rastrelli. “Oak” is known for the fact that during the reign of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna in its pool every year on August 1 (August 14, according to the new style), a ritual of consecration of water and sprinkling with holy water of regimental banners of all military units located in Peterhof was performed. The tradition has been revived today.

Earlier in July, vandals broke four fingers of a Venus statue in Peterhof. The sculpture will be restored.
