One person was killed and several others seriously injured in a tornado in the state of Alabama in the southeastern United States, US media reported on Tuesday.

The tornado that struck the town of Fultondale, County of Jefferson late Monday caused “significant damage,” the National Weather Service (NWS) said on Twitter.

One person died and at least five others were hospitalized with serious injuries, Fultondale Police Chief DP Smith told local news site AL.com.

According to him, the victim died after a tree fell on his house.

Jefferson County Medical Examiner Bill Yates confirmed the death to CNN, adding that the damage was “extensive.”

On social networks, photos show houses and buildings in ruins, car wrecks, cut roads …

“Looks like a bomb went off,” Sam Moerbe, the local pastor’s 18-year-old son, told AL.com.

“The roof flew off, and the walls. In a few seconds, everything was gone, ”Janice Hamilton, a resident of Fultondale, told the same media, explaining that she was in her bed at the time.

Fultondale fire chief Justin McKenzie also told local ABC 33/40 “several houses” damaged, “several injuries”, as well as “people trapped”.

“We still have people stuck in houses,” Mayor Larry Holcomb told The New York Times.

Reinforcements of firefighters from the surrounding area were to be sent to help with the search, as the tornado alert issued by the NWS remained in effect Tuesday over many counties in Alabama.
