This aid will be intended in particular for reconstruction efforts following the first emergency phase in the capital.
This involves funding the rehabilitation of hospitals and schools, and providing a roof for the victims, homeless since the huge detonation at the port, where tons of ammonium nitrate were stored.
“The task of rebuilding the lives of the inhabitants and allowing the healing of such devastation has only just begun,” Najat Rochdi, a coordinator of humanitarian aid to Lebanon, told the UN.
She called on the international community not to skimp in putting their hand in the wallet, bearing in mind in particular “the incredible generosity of the Lebanese towards the Syrian and Palestinian refugees”.
The August 4 explosion, illustrating the corruption and mismanagement of Lebanese politicians, left more than 171 dead and 6,500 injured, and sparked anger in the streets over which the government of Prime Minister Hassan Diab had to present its resignation.
