The language ombudsman of Ukraine Taras Kremin threatened that he would demand to deprive the mandates of deputies who systematically violate the law on the state language.

“This is not the first signal that local deputies systematically violate language legislation … In this regard, we will appeal to the relevant political forces with a demand to deprive representatives of parliamentary mandates who systematically violate the law and the oath,” said Kremin during another plenary session of the session of the Kharkiv City Council.

So, according to him, using a non-state language in the performance of official duties, the deputies violate not only article 12 of the Law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language”, but also the deputy’s oath.

In 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the final reading the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language.”

The bill implies the use of only the Ukrainian language by state and local authorities, educational institutions, hospitals, as well as in the service sector. Thus, the use of the Russian language, which is spoken by a significant number of residents of Ukraine, is virtually excluded.
