Turnout in presidential elections in Belarus exceeded 73%

The turnout in the presidential elections in Belarus at 16:00 was 73.4%. This was announced on Sunday, August 9, by the deputy chairman of the country’s Central Election Commission, Vadim Ipatov.

In the Brest region, the turnout was 75.11%, Vitebsk – 75.05%, Gomel – 81.87%, Grodno – 75.66%, Minsk – 72.30%, Mogilev – 80.29%, in the city of Minsk – 58.73%, TASS reports.

The elections were declared valid, since more than half of the voters have already voted. At the same time, the current President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko noted that he does not count on the international recognition of the elections.

In addition, Lukashenka assured that the country would not be plunged into civil war after the presidential elections.

There are five candidates running for the presidency of the country: Andrey Dmitriev, Anna Kanopatskaya, Alexander Lukashenko, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Sergey Cherechnya. Viktor Babariko and Valery Tsepkalo were denied registration.

Lukashenko has been in office since 1994. If he wins, this will be the sixth term.
