A Chinese court sentenced a Canadian citizen to death for the clandestine manufacture and distribution of ketamine, a narcotic substance, the BBC writes.
The Guangzhou City Court found Xu Weihong guilty and sentenced the Canadian citizen to death. His accomplice Wen Guansong was sentenced to life in prison. Weihong is the third Canadian to be sentenced to death in China. Relations between Canada and China became particularly strained when a Huawei CEO was arrested in Vancouver in 2018.
Local media reports that Xu Weihong and Wen Guansong have been making ketamine since October 2016. The police seized 120 kg of the substance from Weihong’s home. Ketamine is an anesthetic used in emergency medicine, as a pain reliever, and in veterinary medicine. It is a psychoactive substance that alters the perception of reality.
