According to the Nigerian newspaper Vanguard, the military who staged a coup in Mali announced the creation of the National Committee for the Rescue of the People, which, according to the deputy chief of staff of the Mali Air Force, Colonel Ismael Wage, takes responsibility “to the nation and history.” He stressed that Mali is plunging into chaos and anarchy every day, and criticized the actions of the country’s government, accusing it of corruption.
The day before, the military captured the country’s President Ibrahim Bubacar Keith and Prime Minister Bubu Cisse. The actions of the rebels were condemned by the EU and the UN. The Secretary General of the organization, Antonio Guterres, demanded the immediate release of the president.
A few hours after the coup, the president announced his resignation and the dissolution of the cabinet. The politician said he did not want to become the cause of bloodshed.
