Moscow | The Kremlin denounced Friday the “very aggressive” remarks of the new American president Joe Biden, the day after a combative speech against Russia and calling for the release of the opponent Alexeï Navalny.

“It is a very aggressive and not constructive rhetoric, we regret it”, declared during a telephone press point Dmitri Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian presidency.

However, he said he hoped there would remain “a basis for cooperation, despite the enormous amount of disputes and differences on key issues.”

In remarks to the State Department on Thursday, President Biden took a much tougher tone on Russia than his predecessor Donald Trump.

He said in particular that he informed Vladimir Putin that “the time when the United States submitted to the aggressive acts of Russia (…) was over” and that his administration was going to fight against “the will of Russia to weaken our democracy ”.

Mr. Biden did not announce concrete measures targeting Moscow, but multiplied the warnings, citing in particular the case of the poisoning and the imprisonment of the opponent Navalny.
