The United States clearly cannot initiate the process of restoring international sanctions against Iran. This was announced on Sunday, September 20, by the head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU) Josep Borrell.
“The United States unilaterally terminated its participation in the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. – Ed.) On the basis of the presidential memorandum on May 8, 2018 <...>. Therefore, the United States cannot be considered a member state of the JCPOA and cannot initiate the process of restoring UN sanctions in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2231, ”Borrell said in a statement on the EU website.
He noted that he will do everything possible to ensure that the JCPOA is maintained and fully implemented by all participants. In his opinion, this plan contributes to regional and global security, as it comprehensively considers Iran’s nuclear program.
“I urge everyone to do everything possible to maintain the agreement and refrain from any action that could be perceived as escalating in the current situation,” Borrell added.
Earlier on Sunday, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the resumption of UN sanctions against Iran, despite the fact that the organization itself does not agree with this.
At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the United States continues to mislead the international community by speculating on the topic of restoring sanctions against Iran.
UN Security Council sanctions against Iran were lifted after the signing of the Joint Action Plan in 2015 and Tehran’s abandonment of its nuclear program. In 2018, the United States announced that it had ended the nuclear deal.
