A team of Russian scientists has developed a methodology that will help to identify the disease in the early stages and begin effective treatment.
According to the WHO, more than 90% of the adult population of the planet is subject to periodontitis. In severe forms of the disease, patients may lose their teeth due to serious changes in the surrounding “frame”. Scientists from the Perm Polytechnic University studied the harbingers of the disease and developed a methodology that will help to identify them. The results of the work were published in the Ural Medical Journal.
In clinical studies, 267 patients took part, of which 78 people were diagnosed with chronic periodontitis of mild severity. The control group consisted of 10 people with intact dentition.
Experiments with the use of measuring instruments have shown that at the initial stage of periodontitis there is an increased displacement of the teeth by 1.3–2.6 times. Contact stresses in the jaw also increase by 1.5 times. Moreover, these signs are not detected by conventional methods, and the doctors simply did not see them before.
