The presidential candidate of Belarus Sergei Cherechen on Friday, August 7, said that the head of his campaign headquarters, Nikolai Lysenkov, was arrested for 10 days.
“The judgment is 10 days of arrest. You perfectly understand what country we live in and what methods the current government uses against alternative candidates, ”Cherechen said in a video message posted on his Telegram channel.
In his opinion, Lysenkov’s detention is connected with the “desire of the authorities to isolate preventively” and intimidate candidates who are opponents of the current leadership of the country.
On August 6, it was reported about the detention of the chief of the election headquarters of the presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya Maria Moroz.
On August 4, the incumbent President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko called on his opponents “not to get underfoot” and let him save the state. He noted that the country’s authorities would accept any decision of the people in the upcoming presidential elections, but asked not to betray, as this “is not forgiven even in heaven”.
The elections will be held on August 9. The Central Election Commission registered five people as candidates: Andrey Dmitriev, Anna Kanopatskaya, Alexander Lukashenko, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Sergey Cherechnya. Two applicants – Viktor Babariko and Valery Tsepkalo – were denied registration.
If he wins, this will be the sixth term for Lukashenka.
