The Russian scientist does not believe that the Russian fleet is capable of withstanding hostilities from Japan and the United States if they decide to seize the Kuril Islands by force. In the opinion, in the existing structure, the Pacific Fleet will not be able to defend the Far East and repel aggression. The deputy president of the Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Sciences for Information Policy, Doctor of Military Sciences Konstantin Sivkov told about this in the “Military-Industrial Courier”, reports Lenta.ru.
“The losses of the Pacific Fleet can be from one third to two thirds, depending on the type of forces, after which it will lose its significance as an operational and strategic formation,” says Konstantin Sivkov.
Sivkov explained that if Japan decides to seize the southern islands of the Kuril ridge, then the Pacific Fleet of the Russian Navy will not be able to hold them. In addition, he is confident that Japan will not go into a military conflict without the support of the United States. At the same time, the strategy will be based on the landing of the enemy on the four southern Kuril islands, and the navy will block the scene from the ships of the Russian fleet.
Thus, according to Konstantin Sivkov, the seizure of the disputed territories may take from 8 to 20 days. To repel this attack, Russia will have to involve “the main forces of the Pacific Fleet, part of the long-range aviation forces, the Aerospace Forces (VKS) grouping in Primorye and Kamchatka, as well as the antiamphibious defense forces grouping in the South Kuriles,” Sivkov added. At the same time, the Pacific Fleet of the Navy on its own will not be able to solve this problem.
