Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed hope on Saturday that the next US administration will have “learned” from the failure of Donald Trump’s “policy of pressure” and of the sanctions of Donald Trump against Tehran which did not bend the Islamic Republic .

Outgoing President Donald Trump, on the verge of losing the US presidential election to his Democratic rival Joe Biden, has adopted a policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran, notably through its unilateral withdrawal from the international agreement on Iran’s nuclear power and the reinstatement of sanctions against Tehran in 2018.

“We hope that the experience of the three (last) years will serve as a lesson for the next US administration to comply with (international) laws and rules and return to its commitments,” Rohani said in a televised speech.

“Our people have faced economic terrorism for the past three years and shown unparalleled resilience and patience,” he continued, adding that the nation “will continue to resist and be patient until ‘that the other side bow to international laws.

The Iranian president expressed the wish that “those imposing sanctions realize that the chosen path was wrong”, assuring “that they would never achieve their objectives” in this way.

Senior Iranian officials have reiterated that they will focus on the policies adopted by the next US administration rather than on the person of the next president.

Tehran also stressed that a potential return of Washington to the nuclear treaty should be accompanied by compensation for the damage caused by the American withdrawal and a “guarantee” that it will not happen again.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei assured Tuesday that the US election would “have no effect” on Tehran’s policy towards Washington.

Three days after the American presidential election, Joe Biden was sure Friday evening of his victory without however proclaiming it.

He has already indicated his intention to embark on a “credible path to return to diplomacy” with Tehran if he becomes president and the possibility of joining the agreement concluded in 2015 under the presidency of Barack Obama, which Mr. Biden was the vice president.
