Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in an international climate summit. Using the example of the Sakhalin Oblast, he described how the country plans to achieve carbon neutrality.
The head of state is confident that this task can be realized. Putin noted that over thirty years Russia has reduced the volume of greenhouse gases from 3.1 billion tons to 1.6 billion tons.
“This was the result of a radical restructuring of the Russian industry and energy, which has been going on over the past 20 years,” the President noted.
He added that Russia does not plan to stop there. A program to create a carbon pricing and carbon trading system will be tested in the Sakhalin Oblast. If all goes well, the region could become carbon neutral by 2025. In the future, this practice can be extended to the entire country.
