President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Alexander Dyukov was elected to the executive committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The decision was made at a meeting of the UEFA Congress in Montreux, Switzerland on Tuesday, April 20.
There are nine candidates running for eight seats in the executive committee. For Dyukov, 50 votes were cast, with 28 required.
Also, within the framework of the congress, elections to the European Council of the International Football Federation (FIFA) will be held.
Dyukov headed the RFU in 2019, in February of this year he was re-elected for a new four-year term.
On the eve, he said that the RFU supports the position of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), European federations and leagues, as well as fans around the world opposing the creation of the Super League.
Earlier, on the night of April 18 to April 19, it became known that 12 top European clubs announced the creation of a football Super League. The tournament is slated to kick off in August 2021.
On 18 April, UEFA, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the Spanish Royal Football Federation (RFEF) and the Football Association of England (FA) issued a statement on the creation of the Super League. It noted that they are using all available methods to prevent this formation.
Also, the president of Tinkoff – the Russian Premier League (RPL), Sergei Pryadkin, expressed solidarity with the position of UEFA and everyone who opposes the creation of the Super League.
