US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has officially notified the UN Security Council of the restoration of US sanctions against Iran, reports Associated Press.

It is noted that the organization received the relevant documents from the State Department.

The day before, US President Donald Trump announced his decision to restore sanctions against Tehran. In particular, Washington will extend the arms embargo for 13 years and introduce a ban on uranium enrichment.

The restrictions will take effect 30 days after notification by the UN. At the same time, Pompeo expressed the hope that the UN Security Council would support the US initiative.

On August 14, the Security Council no longer supported the American resolution on the introduction of an arms embargo against Tehran. As the State Department later explained, Washington is concerned that Iran may receive Russian air defense systems.

On August 20, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the United States has no reason to talk about the restoration of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, stressing that Moscow condemns Washington’s actions.

The sanctions against Iran were lifted after the signing of the Joint Action Plan (JCPOA) in 2015 between the Iranian side, the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Then Iran pledged not to develop a nuclear program.

In 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement.
