The US authorities intend to carry out several cyber attacks on Russian government systems within three weeks, writes The New York Times on Sunday, March 7.
According to sources, in the near future the United States will carry out “covert counterattacks”, which will become known to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, intelligence and the military, but not to the outside world.
In addition, the United States plans to impose economic sanctions on Russia in response to the hacking actions, which, according to the American side, were committed by Moscow.
Also, US President Joe Biden may sign a decree to strengthen government systems against the backdrop of cyberattacks.
On February 23, The Washington Post reported that cyberattacks through the powerful SolarWinds program hackers hacked into government agencies and private companies. According to a White House spokesman, the Russian campaign allegedly affected nine US government agencies and about 100 private companies.
On the same day, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that Washington plans to soon respond to the unfriendly steps attributed to Russia.
On February 17, the United States announced that the Solarwind hacker was likely carried out by a Russian-born hacker.
Last December, the US Justice Department blamed Russia for a massive cyberattack on the country’s government networks. No evidence was provided.
