In the past elections, the Democrats in New York State considered one of their main tasks to ensure a “super-majority” in the Senate, that is, to those 40 seats out of 63 that the party already had, add at least 2 more and have at their disposal two-thirds of the votes in case it is necessary to veto the initiatives of the governor.

Was it successful? Due to the specifics of the current vote, which took place in a pandemic, summing up the results will take longer than before. But already now we can draw some conclusions. One of them: the democrats may have overestimated their capabilities somewhat. So, for example, according to preliminary data, Republican Vito Bruno, a former owner of a nightclub, took over the current Democratic Senator Andrew Gunardes. Another Republican, Michael Martucci, although not yet definitively confirmed, took the Senatorial seat from Democrat Jen Metzger, who occupied it.

There are no special surprises in the Assembly. It seems that the Democrats retained the advantage, but with some nuances: there is a strengthening of the positions of the “progressives” – deputies of the left wing.
