New US Ambassador to Belarus Julie Fisher met with former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. This was announced on Thursday, February 4, by the press service of the American diplomatic mission in Minsk.

“At today’s meeting with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Ambassador-designate Fischer confirmed that the United States will continue to support the people of Belarus and those people around the world who face terrible cruelty while exercising their fundamental freedoms,” reads a statement posted on the official website of the diplomatic mission in Twitter

Earlier, on January 27, Tikhanovskaya expressed hope that the fourth package of EU sanctions against Minsk would be adopted in the very near future. In addition, she spoke of regret over the too modest, in her opinion, reaction of the world to the political crisis in Belarus.

In addition, she called on Western countries to strengthen sanctions and pressure on Minsk, to investigate already “committed crimes against humanity”, and also to recognize the OMON and GUBOPiK terrorist organizations.

On January 19, Tikhanovskaya called on the OSCE participants to create a platform that would allow discussing the crisis in the republic. She also appealed to international organizations with a request to ensure her safe return to Belarus.

After the presidential elections held in Belarus on August 9, in which Alexander Lukashenko won for the sixth time, who, according to the CEC, gained 80.1% of the vote, massive opposition protests began in the country. The voting results were not recognized by the United States and European countries. Tikhanovskaya left for Lithuania, where she began to hold meetings with EU leaders, in particular with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
