Taking antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription, including for coronavirus, carries serious health risks. This was announced on Monday, November 16, by the Minister of Health of Russia Mikhail Murashko.

“The use of antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription carries enormous risks for patients. First of all, the formation of a drug-resistant flora. <...> And this therapy is already from the category of heavy artillery, “he said in an interview with the Russia 24 TV channel.

The head of the Ministry of Health emphasized that self-prescription of therapy is not encouraged, since the treatment should be heard from the doctor.

Earlier, on November 10, the chief microbiologist and antimicrobial resistance specialist of the Russian Ministry of Health, Roman Kozlov, said that more than 90% of patients with coronavirus infection are currently receiving antibiotics, but they are not active against COVID-19.

The spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, began at the end of December last year. The Chinese city of Wuhan became the hotbed of infection. For several months, the disease has spread to more than 210 countries of the world. On March 11, WHO declared a coronavirus pandemic.

According to the latest data, 1,948,603 cases of coronavirus were detected in Russia in 85 regions. For the entire period, 33,489 deaths were recorded, 1,453,849 people recovered.
