The US Department of Defense granted control over millions of its unused IP addresses to the previously unknown small company Global Resource Systems just three minutes before Joe Biden took office as president of the country, TASS reports citing The Washington Post.

According to the newspaper, on the day of Biden’s inauguration on January 20, the company gained control over 56 million IP-addresses of the Pentagon, then their number increased and now reaches 175 million. According to the newspaper’s calculations, this is about 6% of all IP-addresses on the Internet and exceeds the volume. controlled by such American telecom giants as Comcast and AT&T.

The Pentagon said Global Resource Systems is being used as part of a pilot project to assess the defense department’s IP address space and ensure that there are no “potential vulnerabilities.”

The project, according to representatives of the ministry, will prevent “unauthorized use” of the IP address space and develop measures to respond to “modern threats in cyberspace.”
