Neither Tijuana coach Pablo Guede or Chivas coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich are known for embracing attractive, attacking soccer, and the match between Xolos and Chivas did nothing to change this as the sides played to a 0-0 draw at Estadio Caliente. Jonathan Orozco got his third shutout of the season while Raúl Gudiño got his first.

Chivas started the game fully in control, retaining possession and moving at will. José Juan Macías had a great opportunity in the second minute when he hit a curling shot but Jonathan Orozco made a good save to keep the ball out. Chivas made another promising run in the seventh minute but a centering cross missed its mark and allowed Xolos to win a throw in. Tijuana had their first chance two minutes later when Fabián Castillo made a run down the left and hit a brilliant cut-back pass to Luis Leal, who made his first start with Tijuana. Leal’s run was timed perfectly, but a Chivas defender was able to get a touch on the shot to deflect it wide of the net.

Both sides looked fairly dangerous in fits and starts, although both were prone to self-inflicted wounds. Tijuana often attempted passes that wound up going out of bounds while Chivas shot seemingly just to shoot. Tijuana had a great chance in the 35th when Castillo made a great move to go through the defense and knock the ball forward to Christian Rivera, but the shot was well saved. On the ensuing corner kick, Edgar López hit the crossbar, and in the ensuing melee Lainez knocked it in, but the referee judged that goalkeeper Raúl Gudiño was run into and disallowed the goal.

As the half ended, the coaching staffs of both teams started pushing and shoving and screaming at one another. They’d eventually separate and head to their respective locker rooms.

The second half started off as a continuation of the first, minus the coaches yelling at one another. Neither team presented much danger to the other until the 53rd when Tijuana was finally able to string together a decent sequence that ended with Leal in on Gudiño and taking a shot, attempting to nutmeg the goalkeeper. Gudiño was able to sit on the shot as it went between his legs, holding onto it to Leal’s bewilderment.

Fabian Castillo had a good opportunity in the 68th when he was able to break through the onside trap and get a head onto a ball, but Gudiño had a bead on it and was able to easily stop the chance. Chivas has a good chance in the 72nd when off of a set piece Hiram Mier came within inches of getting to a header from Antonio Briseño. Instead of connecting with the ball however, he connected with Jonathan Orozco and both players spent some time down on the pitch in pain but were able to shake it off and continue.

Xolos had a decent amount of possession in the Chivas box in the 85th minute, but a shot never materialized. Then in the 86th Kevin Balanta had a shot from distance that Gudiño was forced to make a save on. But neither side was able to break through and get a winning goal, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

Tijuana will use the international break to play a makeup match against Santos Laguna on Sunday, October 11 in Torreón and will then face Necaxa in Aguascalientes on Friday, October 16. Chivas on the other hand will host Atlas in the Clésico Tapatío on Saturday, October 17.
