Mali’s president detained by rebels announced his resignation

Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was taken into custody by military rebels on 18 August, announced his resignation.

He announced this on the air of the Mali Radio and Television Service.

“I made the decision to resign all my powers … … I do not want blood to be shed in order to preserve my power,” he said.

Keita also noted that the parliament would be dissolved and the Cabinet dismissed, writes TASS.

Earlier, on Tuesday, it became known about the detention by the military during the coup of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keith and Prime Minister Bubu Cisse. In addition, it was reported that unknown armed people abducted the chairman of the National Assembly Musa Timbine and the country’s Minister of Economy and Finance Abdulai Daffa.

The actions of the rebels were condemned by the EU and the UN. The Secretary General of the organization, Antonio Guterres, demanded the immediate release of the President of Mali and members of his cabinet.
