French President Emmanuel Macron has demanded decisive action from world leaders in support of Lebanon after the tragic explosion in Beirut, BBC reported.
President Macron organized a videoconference to coordinate aid to Lebanon in connection with the massive explosion that took place on August 4 in the port of Beirut. He stressed that assistance must be provided directly to the citizens of Lebanon. US President Donald Trump also took part in the videoconference.
An explosion of 2.7 thousand tons of ammonium nitrate, stored in a warehouse in the port of Beirut, killed 158 people, injured 6 thousand, collapsed building facades, damaged residential complexes throughout the city. The total damage is estimated at approximately $ 15 billion. Despite claims of the explosiveness of nitrate, the substance was stored in the warehouse for over 6 years. The tragedy has provoked outrage in a society outraged by the corruption and incompetence of the current Lebanese government. Several thousand people protested, trying to storm the buildings of several ministries. The police used tear gas to quell the riots.
