President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, in a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on October 24, called Russia the main ally of the republic. This was reported by the Belarusian ONT TV channel.

It is alleged that Lukashenko appreciated the support provided by Russia and stressed that it does not interfere in the internal affairs of the republic, while both countries are ready to jointly respond to external threats.

In turn, Mike Pompeo said that the United States is adherents of the republic’s sovereignty and supporters of developing cooperation with Belarus.

“The interlocutors discussed the situation in the world. By mutual opinion, after Pompeo’s February visit to Minsk, the situation has changed dramatically, new challenges have arisen and are still emerging, “RIA Novosti reports.

Mike Pompeo visited Belarus in February as part of his European tour. During those negotiations, the US Secretary of State said that the American authorities did not give Minsk a choice – to cooperate with Moscow or with Washington.

In September, Pompeo called on the Belarusian authorities to stop using violence against participants in unsanctioned rallies that continued in the republic after the December 9 presidential elections, which were won by Lukashenko. According to him, the US and EU discussed the possibility of introducing additional sanctions against Belarus.
