The Israeli authorities actually accused Iran of an act of environmental terrorism in connection with the oil spill in the Mediterranean in early February. Later, the oil slick was carried away by the current to the coast of Israel, which led to the worst pollution in many decades. According to journalist Erez Raviva, the Libyan oil tanker “Izumrud”, loaded with Iranian oil, went with the transponder turned off, periodically “flashing”. In the region of Syrian Latakia, oil was transferred from a tanker to smaller vessels. At that moment, her spill occurred. After the incident, the ship reportedly returned to the Persian Gulf, from where it came. Specialists of the Ministry of Ecology, in turn, are inclined to the version of a technical malfunction on board the 19-year-old vessel. At the same time, the fact of smuggling is confirmed unambiguously.
