Patients who are being treated for coronavirus at home are advised to drink plenty of fortified drinks and lie on their stomach. This was told to AGN “Moscow” by the infectious disease doctor, head of the infectious diseases departments of the hospital №2 Maria Myasnikova on November 28.
According to her, the first and most important rule is “strict adherence” to the doctor’s recommendations and prescriptions. It is also imperative to stay at home and take your doctor’s prescribed medications.
“We know that in order to lower the temperature, the body must evaporate the liquid. With a new coronavirus infection, drink plenty of fluids. If a person normally consumes about 2–2.5 liters per day, then at elevated temperatures it is necessary to increase its amount and add a fortified drink. Don’t forget about fruits rich in vitamin C, ”Myasnikova said.
The infectious disease specialist emphasized that during the treatment for COVID-19, you should lie on your stomach more, as this increases the rate of oxygen saturation in the blood.
“When a person lies on their back, their respiratory volume decreases. The ideal position is lying on your stomach, ”she said.
According to the head, for convenience, you can put one pillow under the ribcage, the second under the pelvis, so that “the stomach sags a little.” A person will be more comfortable in this way, the lungs will expand, she explained. It is difficult for overweight people to lie on their stomachs, they are recommended to lie on their side.
“Observance of the pron-position is not even a preventive, but a medical procedure that increases the oxygen saturation index by two or three units,” the doctor added.
Myasnikova stressed that in order to accelerate recovery, breathing exercises should be performed, at first – minimal. Then, as the condition stabilizes and the state of health improves, the exercises can be complicated. What kind of exercises you need to do, your doctor will tell you.
“At the stage of recovery, it is necessary to exclude serious physical activity and rest more. This is the very minimum set of techniques that a person at home can help himself with, ”concluded the infectious disease specialist.
Earlier on the same day, immunologist Vladislav Zhemchugov said that yoga breathing exercises would allow survivors of COVID-19 to get rid of the effects of the infection. The specialist noted that everyone has an individual rehabilitation program, but many of those who have recovered have respiratory problems due to damaged lungs.
