Chances are – if you are here reading this then your living room furniture is too big or you have too many furniture pieces to fit your corner fireplace layout.
If this is the case, you’ll either have to get rid of a lot of your furniture or acquire new furniture to fit your corner fireplace plan. The Design Issues Caused by Corner Fireplaces Corner fireplaces are odd. There’s no getting around it!
I’ve seen so many uncomfortable corner fireplaces in my design customers’ houses — even in new construction! The challenge arises from the fact that the fireplace is the main point of the room. and furnishings must be arranged in a coherent manner around it.

When the fireplace is against a flat wall, this is simple.
When the fireplace is against a flat wall, either the sofa/sectional or two chairs are parallel to it and facing it. When the fireplace is in a corner, however, the furniture arrangement becomes more challenging.
The Corner Fireplace in the Open Concept Living Room
What are the greatest pieces of furniture for a decent corner fireplace furniture arrangement in an open concept home? For an open concept living room with a corner fireplace, a mix of the following furniture seats works best:
- one or two chairs and two couches
- two oversized couches
- One or two chairs and a sectional sofa
- four comfy seats A set of four chairs might be the nicest furniture.

What about a small living room with a corner fireplace?
The number of furniture items in a living room that is narrow and has a corner fireplace is restricted. This setup may only allow for one sofa or two chairs. Another option is to get an apartment-sized sofa or a compact sectional sofa that will fit in a tiny living room.
What is the best way to arrange furniture around a corner fireplace?
In my view, the ideal furniture plan is: When you put furniture parallel to and facing a fireplace, the corners of the furniture will stick out, making traffic flow around the furniture problematic. It’s also not the most efficient use of space. Instead, arrange your sofa perpendicular to the corner fireplace, with the second sofa kitty-corner to it. With the two sofas, this will result in an L-shaped furniture arrangement (or sofa and two chairs). Place a sectional sofa perpendicular to the corner fireplace as well.
Should you arrange your sofa in front of the fireplace?
No! This does not seem nice in my opinion! Placement of a sofa directly facing the fireplace and parallel to the fireplace will block off a piece of the living room and make chair placement problematic or impossible. It will also cause the furniture’s corners to protrude in the room. To accommodate the corner fireplace arrangement, you may need to change all or a portion of your furniture.
