Athens | Two doctors on the front lines of the fight against the coronavirus in one of Greece’s largest hospitals were killed in an avalanche while on a mountain hike, a medical association has announced.

The Larissa Medical Association, the country’s fifth largest city, said the two doctors, a pathologist and an anesthesiologist, were working in the intensive care unit of the city’s general hospital.

“We are concerned because their loss is also that of two deserving scientists on the front line of the battle against the coronavirus,” the association said in a statement.

The two medics were hiking on Mount Olympus, the country’s highest peak, on Thursday when the avalanche occurred. A third person who was part of the group alerted the rescuers.

Called the “mountain of the gods,” Mount Olympus was considered in Greek mythology to be the domain of Zeus and other gods.

The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 5,700 people in Greece and more than 260 patients are hospitalized in intensive care units.
