Despite the confinement accompanied by a night curfew imposed since November, hospitals are filled beyond their capacity to accommodate people infected with the coronavirus.
The Edy has recorded 1,400 new cases of COVID-19 and 57 additional deaths since Saturday, bringing their total number to 333,129 and 10,007 respectively. In addition, 816 people are currently in intensive care.
The second and third waves of the pandemic were more virulent than that of spring 2020.
At the time of the appearance on its territory of COVID-19, in February 2020, Greece had imposed strict containment early enough, fearing the failures of its hospital system.
In May, when containment was lifted, it only deplored 146 deaths and 2,642 cases for 11 million inhabitants, one of the lowest rates in Europe.
But the number of contaminations gradually resumed during the summer and last autumn with the opening of the tourist season.
The second wave in November forced the Greek authorities to re-enforce strict containment.
In December, the total number of deaths from COVID-19 jumped to nearly 3,300 and that of contaminations to 119,720. Two months later, the number of deaths had almost doubled to more than 6,500, before rising continue to progress.
In recent weeks, between 60 and 100 people have died from this disease every day.
However, in view of the start of the tourist season scheduled for mid-May, the government has started to ease restrictions and the terrace bars and cafes will reopen on May 3.
