According to many experts, representatives of the German justice sector are currently experiencing a crisis. The judges themselves complain that for several years they have been overworked, with not the best working conditions and salaries that are not comparable to the efforts.
How much do judges and prosecutors earn?
According to the German media, each federal state has its own tariffication. In most Länder, judges are paid at the R1 rate. For example, in Bavaria, the amount of income under the R1 tariff, depending on seniority, varies from € 4200 to € 6520, in Berlin – from € 3990 to € 6100. It does not matter whether a judge works in a district, social or administrative court.
The R2 salary is paid to judges in a higher position, such as a deputy chairman of a district court or a judge of a higher administrative court. Senior prosecutors are also often paid at the R2 grade. Thus, in Bavaria, depending on the length of service, the salary ranges from € 5100 to € 7112, in Berlin – from € 4770 to € 6650.
Rate category R3 assumes a flat rate. This rate pays for the work of chief prosecutors or heads of small courts. In Bavaria, the basic salary before the R3 tariff is € 7,820, in Berlin – € 500 less. The larger the court, the higher the level of the tariff category. Thus, the R6 tariff rate is paid to presidents of large district courts and attorneys general, as well as judges of the Supreme Federal Court. The salary of a federal judge, which is paid at the R6 rate, is a guideline for determining the salary of members of the Bundestag. They currently receive around € 9,540. The presidents of the supreme federal courts are paid at the R10 tariff rate. This means that they receive about € 13,800 monthly. The same amount is earned by judges of the Federal Constitutional Court, and its president is about € 15,300. In addition, members of the Federal Constitutional Court can travel on trains free of charge.
The German Union of Judges has slightly different information According to the union, at the beginning of a career, a judge or prosecutor earns about € 48,000 per year, and a lawyer of a large firm in the first years of work – about € 118,000. It follows that it is more profitable for top lawyers to choose a profession a lawyer than a judge. But there are not so many good specialists, now in Germany there is a shortage of about 2,000 lawyers.
