Elena Borisovna Gelman-Cherni, an employee of the Department of Physiology of the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, has retired. The professor for whom she has worked for the past four years is now seventy. By law, he no longer had the right to head a department, to have his own scientific workers. For Elena Gelman-Cherni, retirement became a new stage in her life …

It became possible to devote more time to literature, to publish not only scientific works, but also to start writing fiction and documentaries. In the Novosibirsk publishing house “Science” published two of her new books “Make friends with your destiny.” In them, she talks about her belief in the possibility of correcting a person’s fate or relieving her blows. It depends on the active position of the personality itself.

Elena, as a physician, continues to study with enthusiasm everything new that is happening in medical science. Attends scientific seminars, lectures. She continues to develop in the field of new directions of medicine, shares her knowledge and helps everyone to whom her knowledge and experience can help.

She became interested in composing mathematical puzzles. As you know, brain training is not only exciting, but also important for our health. He is passionate about creating new play forms in this area. She fulfilled her old dream – to learn to play a musical instrument. Seeing a harmonica in the store, listening to its pleasant sound, she fell in love with this instrument immediately. I learned to play the harmonica on my own. Soon it turned out to compose a beautiful melody, reminiscent of the Bavarian folk tune. Then other melodies began to appear. I began to write words to these melodies. A professional singer took one of her songs into her repertoire.

Doctor and writer Elena Gelman-Cherni is convinced that success in a person’s life depends on his active position.

Elena Gelman was born into a large family in the small German village of Tigerweide in the Zaporozhye region. Elena calls her family her very first success in life: “We had unusually kind, good parents. You don’t often see parents like my dad and mom. “

The Great Patriotic War began. The village was occupied by the Nazis. After some time, the surviving residents were ordered to leave for Germany. I had to harness the carts and hit the road. It was possible to reach Poland, but by that time the Soviet Army had already begun to gain victory after victory, to return the lost cities and villages. The Nazis retreated and it was possible to return to their native German village. Soon they were informed that all Germans were ordered to move to their place of residence in Siberia.

“We arrived in Novosibirsk in December 1945. I remember that that day it was minus forty-six degrees. My dad and older brother were immediately recruited to work at the plant. Mom stayed at home with us, her two youngest daughters and her son. We, children, constantly felt care of us. Soon we went to school. By that time they already knew a little Russian. But still, it was not enough, and for the first six months a former teacher of German studied with us. We all studied well, although our parents were illiterate.

At the end of my studies, when the exams began, I didn’t prepare very well for the biology exam. I turned to the director of the school with a request to retake it in the fall, so as not to have a three in the certificate. I was allowed. And so, when I was preparing for retaking, I came across a new, recently published textbook. And I was so carried away by the experiments of Academician Pavlov described there that it influenced my fate. I decided to become a physiologist.

But I could not go to the university, then Germans were not accepted there. I went to study at the medical institute. I stayed there to work. I began to publish publications, scientific works. And soon a new subject was introduced at the departments of the Novosibirsk Pedagogical Institute – “Age Physiology”. So I started teaching – I was the only physiologist at that time at the institute. “

Soon Elena got married, they had two children. She considers her husband the second gift of her fate. We lived from the first day amicably, in love and harmony. Their youngest daughter graduated from school with a gold medal. The eldest son, having graduated with honors from the Institute of Water Transport Engineers, received a postgraduate position. But perestroika times came, over time everything in the country changed, graduate schools began to close. The son had nowhere to apply his knowledge. And when his son decided to move to Germany, where he wanted to continue his professional development, the whole family decided to move with him.

In Germany, everyone had a very fortunate fate. My son is a successful specialist working in the city of Kiel. My daughter, having graduated with honors from the University of Augsburg, became an excellent mathematician. Elena has six grandchildren. One of them has been ranked first in mathematics Olympiads for schoolchildren in Bavaria for several years and third in Germany.

When Elena just moved to a new place of residence, in order to be eligible to work at the department at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, she needed to confirm her medical degree. This required two years of work in hospitals. She enjoyed working as a doctor on duty – she was invited by various large clinics and medical centers in the city. She proved herself to be a highly qualified specialist from the very first days of work. And her dissertation, written back in Novosibirsk, was recognized in Germany earlier than her diploma. She also made new contacts in the scientific world. It turned out that the Munich Library contains all the scientific works of employees of the Novosibirsk University.

“My life, I’m sure, turned out to be so interesting precisely because of physiology. One way or another, all the happy moments in life happened thanks to this science. I am still friends with Lyudmila Nikolaevna Ivanova, professor, full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She is now ninety, but she still works. We always meet with her when she comes to Germany or I come to Russia. “

Elena Gelman-Cherni is also sure that the symbol of real courage is work in the name of humanity. On the covers of her books, she posted a photo of the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. “For me, this is the most beautiful building in the city. It appeared in 1945, in distant Siberia. And for me it also seems to be a symbol of courage, ─ she says. ─ I often visit my native Novosibirsk. For our family, he always remains close and dear. Our whole family does not have any grudges or negative attitude towards our life in Russia. I have been living in Germany for many years. My six grandchildren are growing up here. My children received an excellent education in Russia, and continued it just as successfully here. This is also a very great success in my life. “

After the death of her husband, Elena’s fate developed in such a way that now she is no longer Gelman, but Gelman-Cherni. And the medicine she loved again played a role in this. The story of this Czerny family is also very amazing and happy. Among the relatives were two world famous doctors – “Hippocrates of the XIX century”, Professor Adolf Kussmaul and an outstanding Heidelberg surgeon, Professor Vincent Czerny. The family also had another celebrity, the professor of painting, Siegfried Czerny. When he died in 1979, newspapers described him as the best portrait painter of the 20th century.

One of the rooms in their old Munich house is now called “museum”. Elena placed family archives, photographs, portraits in it. One of these portraits belongs to the brush of the famous Franz von Lenbach. There are also scientific works of the professor of medicine Vincent Czerny, according to whose methods they still operate in the world.

“We have built a small family chapel in the yard of our 100-year-old house. There are works painted with the brush of Siegfried Czerny, she says. – I have a new book, written in German, being prepared for publication. Although this language is my native language, for many reasons beyond my control, I did not have the opportunity to study it well in childhood and adolescence. Therefore, as I see it, it is not as perfect as I would like. But I am very glad that I speak Russian perfectly. Here I am like a fish in water. I enjoy writing and reading in Russian. I am glad that I received this love of knowledge in my life – even now, upon retirement, I am not at all bored with life.
