The German federal government has openly criticized many airlines for being too slow in compensating passengers who were unable to use their tickets due to bans caused by the coronavirus pandemic. “Failure to satisfy a legitimate claim is unacceptable,” reads the Cabinet’s response to a request from the Green faction in the Bundestag.

It is true that the coronavirus pandemic is a “particularly exceptional situation” for the airline itself. However, a notice issued on 13 May 2020 by the European Commission clearly states that vouchers in exchange for lost tickets can only be issued on a voluntary basis. This means that those who disagree should receive appropriate monetary compensation.

According to the government, the airline already had enough time to prepare and launch the payment process and quickly process requests.
