According to the Robert Koch Institute, there are more infected in Germany, and fewer seriously ill patients. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published new guidelines for the treatment of patients with severe Covid-19.
Recent research suggests that treatment with certain corticosteroids improves disease progression. It is strongly discouraged to prescribe these medications to patients who are mildly suffering from the disease caused by the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus.
WHO recommendations are based on studies of various drugs. Corticosteroids affect the metabolism, electrolyte balance, cardiovascular and nervous systems. These drugs are used, among other things, for immune diseases.
One of the active ingredients in the group is dexamethasone, which has been shown to reduce mortality rates in critically ill Covid-19 patients. The medication does not fight the virus itself, but balances the often overreaction of the immune system.
