The steroid budesonide, used in inhalers for patients with bronchial asthma, is also effective in relieving symptoms COVID-19 early on. Patients who took it early on were less likely to be admitted to the hospital and recovered faster.
This is stated in a study by the University of Oxford, published in April 2021 in the medical journal The Lancet.
According to scientists, patients with COVID-19 who start taking budesonide at the first symptoms of the disease are less likely to need hospitalization and recover faster. In addition, symptoms of COVID-19, including high fever, go away faster than in patients who are treated with traditional methods.
In Germany, the results of the Oxford study were highly appreciated by individual experts. Thus, the deputy from the SPD, ex-epidemiologist Karl Lauterbach said that it could “radically change the situation” because it determines the possibilities of treating coronavirus in the early stages.
Sumiya Swaminathan, WHO Deputy Director General for Programs, also called the results of the study “encouraging” and called for continued exploration of outpatient treatment for COVID-19 patients.
