On April 15, member of the German Bundestag Committee on International Affairs Waldemar Gerdt called on German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to immediately reject Ukraine’s demand for nuclear status.

Gerdt noted that anyone who loves peace and “wants to reduce the nuclear threat” should refuse to support Kiev’s nuclear status.

“I expect Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to immediately reject Ukraine’s demand for nuclear weapons. <...> As a member of the international affairs committee of the German Bundestag, I reject Ukrainian demands for nuclear weapons, “RIA Novosti writes with reference to the deputy’s statement.

The German deputy also noted that now Ukraine is an unreliable partner for the West due to the internal political situation in the country.

Earlier on Thursday, Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk said that Ukraine needs to regain its nuclear status if the country fails to join NATO. He clarified that Ukraine needs not only moral support, it also needs modern weapons systems.

Anton Morozov, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, in response to this statement, noted that Ukraine has no prospects of restoring its nuclear status. According to him, it is depressing that, instead of sitting down at the negotiating table and finding ways to resolve the situation in Donbass, Ukraine is “trying to continue the path to escalate tensions, including with the use of force.”

Senator from the Crimean region, member of the international committee of the Federation Council Sergei Tsekov expressed the opinion that the return to Ukraine of the status of a nuclear power poses a threat to the whole world. The senator noted that Ukraine with nuclear weapons is like “a monkey with a grenade.”
