The ruling party of Georgia “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia” announced the creation of a commission to investigate violations at the last parliamentary elections. If violations are found, the commission will appoint early elections. This was announced on Wednesday, December 9, by the executive secretary of the party Irakli Kobakhidze at a briefing.
The commission will be created at the first meeting of the new parliament. “The parliamentary majority at the very first session of parliament will come up with an initiative to create an interim commission of inquiry to study the 2020 elections. We will involve all interested parties in the work of the commission, including independent experts, non-governmental organizations and international observers, ”Kobakhidze said.
He added that if in the course of detecting violations, at least 1% of the excess votes given to the ruling party are found, early elections will be announced.
The first round of parliamentary elections in Georgia was held on October 31, 2020. According to the CEC, after counting all the votes, the ruling Georgian Dream party won 48.22% of the vote.
However, on November 1, the opposition protested. They refused to recognize the election results, accusing the CEC of falsifying the voting results.
In mid-November, General Secretary of the Georgian Dream party, Kakha Kaladze, announced that the party did not intend to make concessions to the opposition and hold repeated parliamentary elections.
As a result of the second round of parliamentary elections, after counting more than 90% of the data, the candidates from the Georgian Dream party won in all 17 single-mandate constituencies.
