─ Good afternoon, dear editors!
Such a situation: I have a Ukrainian driver’s license. My wife passed on the rights in the United Arab Emirates. I took the exam 8 years ago, my wife ─ three years ago. We have been in Germany for 6 months. I’m here for work. We’ll stay at least another four years. Tell me, do we need to retake the driving license exams in Germany? And will we have a trial period of two years?
Oleg R., Hamburg.
─ Dear Oleg!
Legally acquired foreign rights are valid in Germany without any restrictions during short visits or during a stay in Germany for a maximum of six months. With permanent registration, the driver’s license expires after six months. At the same time, driving a car is equivalent to driving without a license, which is a criminal offense.
Therefore, with a permanent long-term residence in Germany, there is a need to obtain German rights. The rights of certain states specified in the legislation can simply be “rewritten”. Unfortunately, these states do not include either Ukraine or the United Arab Emirates. To obtain a license in your case, you must completely pass both a theoretical and a practical exam. At the same time, you do not need to undergo the training provided for by law, you can simply pass exams, which should not be difficult for an experienced driver. The formalities, however, must be passed.
