Electric Motor: Simplified

When you look around your house or your surroundings you will many devices that run with motors are their principal parts. You might have heard the air conditioner repairer say your motor has a defect and needs to be replaced to get your AC back to normal. Even small things like fans, kids’ toys, hairdryers, etc. have a motor that helps them work. But have you ever wondered how exactly does the electric motor work? If yes, then you found the right article. We simplified the working of a motor as much as possible.

 

If you have ever seen an electric motor before you might’ve noticed how certain parts of it rotate when you turn it on and for those who did actually see a motor before it can be built in various shapes but one common thing about it is the rotating shaft or a disc. It is basically a unit that converts electrical energy to motive or mechanical energy. To understand how a motor works you need to know how a basic circuit works.

 

When you connect the ends of a battery to a bulb with some wires the bulb will light up because of the current flow but when there is a break in the circuit it’s turned off. To turn it on and off whenever required, a switch is the best way to do it. Now let’s move on to magnets, we all know that poles repel and unlike poles attract but in a magnet, a magnet is made up of smaller particles that are placed in the same direction but making a magnet for a motor would be a tedious task. And this is why we use electromagnets. They are created by connecting two wires and a battery along with the Iron metal object that is to be turned into an electromagnet.

 

A normal magnet works only one way, but an electromagnet works both ways even if the current is the opposite. And speaking of the current flow there are two types of motors based on this, they are direct current (DC) and alternate current (AC). The magnet is then connected to a torque that spins whenever the current flows through. No matter the type of motor most of them will produce some type of spinning motion because once it’s spinning you can use it to make different devices move. For example, a fan we see every day wouldn’t be spinning or moving without a motor, the side-to-side motion of a table fan is also done by the movement of motors.

 

It was one of the most important inventions during the second industrial revolution, it has turned the tables in a lot of the mass production industries in the past. How? Back when electric motors didn’t exist manual labor was required to operate machinery with movement, most people had to turn the wheel by their hands to create movement, as soon as motors entered the picture electrical energy was converted into mechanical energy without the use of manual energy and saved quite a big chunk of the profits for the industries.it has taken the industrial revolution by wheels and has drastically improved the energy efficiency and also made it easier for the electricity distribution in longer distances.

 

While the first-ever surviving model about magnetic rotation was in 1820, the first-ever official invention of a battery-powered electric motor was first done in the year 1834 by Thomas Davenport. His idea saw light when he proposed the idea of installing the motor in everyday devices, and here we are today with almost every electronic device working on the principle of a motor or a motor in it.  

 

To say our life today would be tough without an electric motor would be an understatement. Our life would be almost impossible without a motor, and some other major inventions like conveyor belts, pulleys, gear reducers, etc. one of the main sectors that need electric motors is agriculture, where in agriculture? You might be thinking, they use it in irrigation and also in the vehicles and other machinery they use throughout the process. That doesn’t mean the electric motor is unimportant elsewhere, as we said before it‘s almost unimaginable to survive without it.
