Disposable plastic bags harm the environment

For fear of contracting the coronavirus, consumers are increasingly choosing to use disposable plastic containers. But a recently released statement signed by more than 100 scientists from 18 countries makes a strong case for reusable containers without raising the risk of coronavirus infection.

Coronavirus spreads mainly through the inhalation of airborne micro-droplets infected with the virus, rather than touching contaminated surfaces, a group of medical experts – epidemiologists, virologists, biologists, chemists and doctors – said in a statement. With basic hygiene practices (including thoroughly washing reusable containers with soap and hot water), bags, cups, grocery bags and other containers can be reused, the document says.

The need for protective equipment has led to an increase in the use of plastics, and scientists are warning of an increased risk of environmental damage if steps are not taken to popularize reusable containers – especially in food and beverage packaging. “Reusing plastic containers will help reduce the amount of plastic thrown into the trash and protect wildlife, seas and rivers,” said one of the signatory chemists, a professor at Oxford University.
