The EU is faced with a dilemma over the US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Handlesblatt pointed out that the White House is trying to force the European states to abandon the construction of the gas pipeline, “under the guise of anti-Russian slogans.” The publication reminded that this does not prevent Washington from buying oil from Moscow. The author of the material claims that part of the German establishment calls for the introduction of counter-sanctions against the States. There are already concrete proposals: import duty on gas supplies. Handlesblatt believes that the official Berlin lacks the determination to unwind the sanctions spiral.
“Europe is facing a dilemma from which there is no elegant way out,” the article says.
Earlier, the Ukrainian company “Naftogaz” thanked the senators who sent a letter with threats to the port operator in the city of Sassnitz in Germany for supporting the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Earlier, three members of the US Senate sent a letter to the port operator Sassnitz GmbH, which said about Washington’s impending sanctions against companies involved in supporting the construction of the pipeline. It also says that if the work is continued and the gas pipeline project is supported, the port of Sassnitz will face “financial destruction”.
